CURRAMBENA’S 50TH BIRTHDAY!

 

Come and celebrate with us!

 

We are very excited to be celebrating 50 years of progressive, democratic education within an inspiring learning community, a place of talking, listening, playing, creating, passion and discovery!

 

Our big celebration will be on Saturday 21st, with speeches, food, drinks, dancing and kids’ activities. We will also be having an open day at school on Thursday 19th for anyone who is interested to visit. This was going to be on Friday,20th September, however this is the day of the next big climate rally so not many of us will be at school that day. https://www.schoolstrike4climate.com/sept20

 

Thursday 19th September – Currambena Open Day

Come visit anytime between 9.00am and 3.00pm. This will be run as what we now call “Free Friday” with School Meeting at 9:30 then Sustaining Currambena when we do some sweeping and general tidying up. All are welcome to join us for school meeting at 9.30am, just come in for a visit any time between 9am and 3pm or come and hang out for the whole day. Saturday 21st September BIRTHDAY PARTY 2pm till 8pm

2.00pm – Start time

2.30pm – Acknowledgement of Country, singing of the Currambena song and cutting of the most magnificent birthday cake

4.00pm – Tour the school, classrooms will be open so you can stroll through the decades with displays of photos, film, newsletters, current kids’ art exhibits, kids’ activities and entertainment

5.00pm onwards – Live music and dancing

8.00pm – Winding up our fabulous day

Food and drink will be available for purchase throughout the event. We will also have a great selection of Currambena merchandise for sale including – tea towels, pens, photo books, calendars and stunning Currambena art scarves.

INTRODUCTION TO CURRAMBENA ALUMNI

Many former students, families and staff continue to have a relationship with Currambena for years after their own school years.

Some return to enrol their own children and others participate in the classroom, at events, as student teachers or just to drop in and say hello. We love to hear about how life after Currambena is for our alumni and welcome letters, emails and articles with news.

Going back in time a bit now, but some things don’t change – In 1995, an Alumni survey was done by the third year survey research students of Macquarie University: “Overall, this is a picture of largely happy, responsible, high-achieving young people who generally regard their Currambena experience with great affection and appreciation.”

Currambena alumni of all ages are invited to send their comments, pictures, anecdotes and memories of the school by e-mail to enquiries@currambena.nsw.edu.au. 

What happens after Currambena? This is a frequent question, with many different nuances. “Preparation for High School” sessions are conducted for interested students and their parents.  Alumni regularly attend these to offer their observations and experiences. Generally speaking the consensus seems to be that Currambena prepares them well to deal with the different environments that they may encounter. Below are some contributions from currambena alumni.

David Heilpern in October 2007 offered his memories and the closing comment that

I can honestly attribute much of my success to my years at Currambena, for it gave me a love of learning that seems so rare these days, especially among boys.

Nathalie Thibaux contributed a lovely “thank you” poem on 24 June 2004. She came back to Currambena to do her “prac” with Wendy’s class.
