Hello everyone,

It’s been a big week in preschool!

On Monday, we farewelled Abi with warm hugs and heartfelt thanks as our new Diploma-trained assistant commenced with us. To celebrate, the children helped bake banana bread and banana bread cupcakes, and we finished the day with a cheerful little party.

By Wednesday, we warmly welcomed Abi back into the fold, as it became clear that the new assistant was not the right fit for our dynamic and child-led environment. It was lovely to have Abi’s familiar presence and energy return to preschool so quickly.

Throughout the week, our group times have continued to focus on fire and fire safety. The children have become very knowledgeable about what to do in the event of a fire, both in terms of prevention and response. In a stroke of perfect timing, we had a fire drill shortly after one of our sessions, providing an excellent real-world opportunity to put our learning into practice.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to share that on Thursday, May 29, from 10am to 12pm, the preschool children will be heading up to The Canopy to take part in this year’s Children’s Voices for Reconciliation. If your child does not normally attend on Thursdays, you are most welcome to join us for this special community event. Further details will be shared with all families shortly.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,
Katrina, Lisa and Abi

In Maths, we focused on rational and robust counting, which means understanding that the number of items doesn’t change just because they’ve been moved or rearranged. We had lots of fun teaching “Oops the Leopard Puppet” how to count his cookies while preparing for his party!

In English, we enjoyed reading with Kathryn (Noah’s mum) and continued to practice our handwriting and reading skills.

In our Integrated Investigation Unit, “Marine Monsters,” we explored the ocean food chain. We played a food chain game, where we pretended to be plankton, fish, and sharks. We also created our own food chains to understand who eats who in the sea. As part of this unit, we began our investigation into specific creatures and learned about the clownfish and its special relationship with the sea anemone.

In Music, we’ve been learning the song “Baby Beluga,” and in Craft, we created artworks inspired by the song. Stay tuned for this exciting project!

On Friday, many of us came together to create a class colouring/drawing. We had a blast drawing and colouring sea creatures as a big group!

Next Monday, we’ll be heading to the library for the first time this term! Please make sure you’ve visited the library to set up your child’s library card, and don’t forget to pack a library bag so they can easily carry their books back to school.

Looking forward to another fantastic week in the Ladybirds!

With love,
Meg (and Sarah D)

Hi everyone,

Just a short update for this week. We had our first sport choice for the term and the children reported an overall enthusiasm and enjoyment of their chosen sport. My group of bushwalkers had a fantastic time exploring the magic bridge together. We are thinking of going to the mushroom forest next week, but we will need to be very organised and leave promptly at the end of lunch!

In our Space Explorers lesson for the week, we looked at how humans explore space and travel to the moon or other planets. We looked at rockets and how they are able to travel far distances using jet propulsion. In order to replicate this, we made straw rockets that we propelled forward using our breath. The children had a fun time drawing their rockets and projecting them off the library stairs.

Hi Everyone,

Hoping you’ve had a nice weekend and a good week. We’ve been busy making solar systems and looking at the distance of  planets from the sun. We had a fabulous lesson with Jess’ group researching facts on a given planet and then drawing the planets and folding strips of paper into fractions to work out the order and how close the planets are to each other – roughly! With the mention of fractions, our class had a discussion on what is a fraction and then moved on to folding paper into halves, quarters, eighths and thirds. We also created a fraction wall and ‘touched on’ which fractions are equivalent to each other. Also this week for Maths, I introduced some Multiplication strategies and we focused on making groups and recording the number of things in the group, and writing this as a number sentence.

Other things we got up to have included some concentrated and explicit handwriting practice. We turned all the tables around to face the whiteboard, so I could demonstrate, as we wrote rhymes through the alphabet from Aa to Zz. We also did some silent reading, our Soundwaves unit and reading comprehension as well.

The first round of our PE choices began and so did our visit to Lane Cove Library. It’s really nice to be seeing children go through the process of borrowing and re-turning books from the library.

Next week, its our AGM meeting on Thursday night. Hopefully, see as many of you there as possible.

That’s it for the “Cookie Monsters” and me!

Love, Sarah

Dear Parents,

We’ve had lots of  fun this week continuing with our learning about the solar system. The children have been tasked with making their own model of the solar system including deciding how they would like to present this. Some children are considering hanging their planets like a mobile, whilst others are considering setting them against a backdrop or turning them into a diorama. There’s lots of talk about size and scale and its been so fun listening to them try to comprehend the vastness of SPACE.

In maths we’ve continued learning about fractions in relation to the set model and in English we’ve been expanding our vocabulary with word studies and developing our writing in relation to activities to do with our class novel “Ralph and Leo”.

Next Wednesday, we’ll be joining Wendy’s group for a day at the Children’s Writers’ Festival at the Chatswood Concourse. There will be five presentations from Australian children’s authors, promising a fun and educational experience. The children will have the chance to purchase signed copies of the books during the lunch break, so please send them with $20-$25 if you’re happy for them to participate. Don’t forget to pack lunch and a water bottle. The bus will leave at 9:00 am, so please make sure your child is at school by 8:30 am.

Happy weekend,

Jess

For most of this week, we have had our two Macquarie Uni student teachers with us, Quinn and Miso, so lots of help has been available for individuals working on the MUST DO list.

There has been great enthusiasm this week for story writing! We’ve been reading sections of the novel “Runt” and looking at how the author sets the scene, describing characters and locations, using various literary techniques to engage the reader and choosing descriptive words (adjectives) and phrases to help the reader picture the story in their mind. It’s wonderful to see some of these techniques being used by the children in their own writing. Our art project this week is a response to this book, creating then and now pictures of the town of Upson Downs.

We’ve started on fractions in maths, creating diagrams to show unit fractions and placing fractions on a number line to show relationships. This week, Unit 6 needs to be excellent and unit 7 complete in both textbooks.

Many thanks to Archana for looking after the group when I had to go to an appointment in the middle of the day on Wednesday. Needless to say, the children were so well organised they continued with their activities and were completely settled when I returned. Thanks also to Sarah M for sharing Archana’s time! We are very blessed with our assistant teachers these days!

Class Meeting discussed the planned Class Ball and chose a tentative date, Friday 27th June. Please check your family calendar and make sure your child knows if there is a problem with that date. We do want everyone to be able to come if possible!

Next week on Wednesday, we are going with Jess’s group to a day of the Children’s Writer’s Festival at Chatswood Concourse. There will be five different presentations from Australian children’s authors and it should be great fun as well as a fabulous learning experience. There will be the chance to purchase signed copies of the books so children could bring $20-$25 to buy a book during the lunch break. Everyone will need to bring a packed lunch and water bottle too. The bus will leave school at 9am to get us there on time so please make sure children are at school by 8:30 that day. If you are running late, please take your child directly to the venue and text me. 0402 410 270

Another important date is THURSDAY, 29TH MAY when Lane Cove Council hosts the annual Children’s Voices for Reconciliation event at The Canopy. It goes from 10:30 til 12 noon (more or less) and out group will be singing two songs which we began practising seriously this week. Mabel has volunteered to speak, giving her response to the theme for 2025 of “Bridging Now to Next” and introducing the songs. Kitty, Harriet and Ollie will be playing guitar with me. Please come along to support us if you can.

With love,
Wendy

Chaired by Max and Siana (Sarah’s class)

  • Responsible elders in the school by Sarah M: A reminder that when playing with children who are younger than yourself, to be mindful of using appropriate language and behaviour. Younger children are influenced by older children and we need to always be modelling appropriate language and behaviour with each other.
  • Watch by preschool: A watch was found and claimed.
  • Weapons by Grace: Grace wanted to ask if she could make a model of a weapon (as an art project) to accompany her project. Someone asked if it was necessary to make a weapon, could something else be made. Grace wanted a vote and the majority of the school voted “yes”. Wendy added that the ‘weapon’ would not be used for anything other than an accompanying piece for her PIP presentation.
  • Mini Concert by Wendy: Wendy wanted to let everyone know there will be a mini concert in 3 weeks time and anyone wanting to perform to please let her know.
  • School start by Kuru: A reminder that school starts at 9:00 am. NOT after 9:00 am
  • Tuesday’s Guitar group played 2 songs for the school who sung along.

Hello everyone,

It felt like we experienced all four seasons in just five days this week! We’ve been encouraging the children to look after themselves and dress appropriately for the weather. That said, our preschoolers seem to run 5 to 10 degrees warmer than adults, with some still reluctant to pop on extra layers!

As many of you know, we welcomed a student teacher, Alex, who joined us this week for a five-day science-based practicum. Alex led several engaging experiments with interested children, connecting beautifully with their current interests in parasites and microorganisms.

During group times, we’ve continued our learning about fire safety and conflict resolution. In our fire safety discussions, we’ve focused on what to do in the unlikely event of a fire—including how to respond if we or someone near us is on fire. The children have also learnt that smoke is dangerous and that we need to crawl low if escaping a building that’s on fire.

In our conflict resolution sessions, we’ve been using the language of being “powerful people”, exploring how powerful people show respect to others, keep themselves safe, eat healthy food, rest well, exercise, and communicate their feelings and needs. These are big and important life skills that are still developing for many children, so we’re continuing to provide plenty of support and guidance throughout the day.

On Wednesday, we went on our first excursion to Lane Cove Library, and the children did an excellent job, following our safety agreements and listening carefully the entire time. We’re now planning our first visit to Kimberley Playground on Monday, weather permitting. As with the library trip, we ask that children arrive as close as possible to 9:00am to allow time to settle into the day before we head out.

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, Alison, our new preschool assistant, will be joining the team full-time from Monday. We also want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Abi for her incredible support and commitment to preschool over the past 18 months. Abi has worked with us on a full-time casual basis throughout last year and Term 1, and we’re so grateful for everything she has contributed to our preschool community. To show our appreciation, we’ll be holding a celebration for Abi on Monday afternoon from 2:30 to 3:00pm. If your child doesn’t attend on Mondays, or if you’d like to join as a parent, you’re very welcome to come along.

Love,

Katrina, Lisa and Abi

What a Big Week for the Ladybirds!

In Maths, we revisited patterns, with a special focus on growing patterns. The children created their own using a variety of classroom resources, building on their understanding of how patterns change and develop.

During English Station Rotations, we had our first Read with a Friend session. The children loved being read to, discussing the stories, and sharing their thoughts. A big thank you to Siobhan for coming in to help! I’m still looking for volunteers for Weeks 7–10. If you’re available, please email me. The children would love to have you join us!

In English, we also began writing our own sentences using heart words. We explored the importance of capital letters and making sure there’s a space between each word.

In our Investigation unit, Marine Monsters, we learnt about the different layers and the unique habitats where creatures live beneath the sea.

Finally, on Friday, we said goodbye to Evie. She’ll be greatly missed, and we wish her all the best at her new school.

With love,
Meg (and Sarah D)
