“If we care at all about ourselves, then we must accept full responsibility for our
own feelings. We must learn to guard against those feelings that have the
capacity to lead our attitude down the wrong path, and to strengthen those
feelings that can lead us confidently into a better future. If we want to receive the rewards the future holds in trust for us, then we must exercise the most important choice given to us as members of the human race by maintaining total dominion over our attitude. Our attitude is an asset, a treasure of great value that must be protected accordingly. When you have the right attitude, you can do the remarkable.”

Hi Everyone!

This week we are busy, busy, busy with play practice, dance practice, prop and costume making and still trying to fit some time in for other types of learning too. The School Concert is only just over a week away and we are all so excited. It starts at 6pm sharp on Friday 11th November outside Fran and Sarah’s room. Please bring your own picnic blankets/ chairs etc. There will be a school social afterwards and it is requested that you bring a plate to share with your family and 2 or or 3 others.

Every week, we have some kind of event until the end of the year so on Tuesday 15th November, we will be going to Sculptures by the Sea with Jo’s class and Preschool. We will be leaving at 9.30.

The week after that, we have orientation morning on the 22nd November. We are beginning to talk about class groups for next year so if you don’t already know, please come and talk ot me about possibilities for your child.

In week 8, we will be going to Mowbray Park (Monday 28th-Wednesday 30th November). Information packs will be sent home on Friday 4th November so please look out for them. For parents who intend to come (and haven’t spoken to me yet) please let me know a.s.a.p. either way so that I can book accordingly (before the end of next week). Permission slips need to be HANDED to me, complete with money, by Friday 18th November. Internet banking may be used , but please look for instructions and correct bank details in the information pack.

This week, we have finally started our long awaited theme on growth and development. We have read “Where do I Come From?” By Peter Mayle and have discussed all the concepts introduced in this book from sex to having a baby. The group have been writing questions for our discussion box and we have been slowly working our way through these questions as a wholoe group. This does mean that many of the children are processing all this information at the moment, and it might mean that it is brought up for discussion at home. It also means that some might be tempted to use their computer time at home to research further on the topic and might require some vigilant parent monitoring of this. We will be talking about the dangers of using the internet to research this particular topic, but it might need to be reiterated at home also.

That’s all for this week, have a great weekend!

From Olivia

Hello Everyone

This week has been busy with concert preparations – practices and costume decisions. The concert will be held next Friday evening at 6.00pm sharp on Fran and Sarah’s veranda. All preschool children participating in the concert will need to be at school at 5.45pm, dressed in whatever they would like to wear to the concert. The choices are ordinary clothes, dress-up clothes from home or preschool or a costume made at home or preschool – pretty much anything is ok!!  Some children have chosen not to participate and they have been our audience. We are supportive of children not wanting to be in the concert. We want them to feel comfortable performing.

The preschool item is about six minutes long so by 6.10pm it will be over. The rest of the primary school will follow us in sequence. Please stay for the rest of the performances if you are able to do so. Supervision throughout the whole evening is the responsibility of the families. Can parents of preschool children please be mindful that the children do not disrupt the rest of the performances? It’s fine to leave the area and go and play in the top playground. Also, please bring chairs to sit on and food to share after the concert.

We have been writing children’s timelines and using the gorgeous photos everyone has sent in. If you have not sent in a baby photo of your child there is still time to do so. You can send in a hard copy or email the photo. Come in and read the timelines – they are beautiful!!

Chris found another little shoe in her garden again this week – a different style and size of shoe. This has sparked thoughtful discussion on Lost Shoe Fairies, baby shoes, the needs of fairies and more. The Tree Fairies have been contacted and have written a couple of letters in connection with these little shoes. We have put the discussions up on the wall.

Our world time line is almost finished – we are up to the domestication of animals, the Pyramids and the building of houses. We have built a prehistoric cave next to the tree and the cubby house in preschool. The children have been looking at rock art and doing their own watercolour paintings inspired by the rock art and playing in the cave. Alyson was on hand this week to secure the rock walls and help with cave paintings. We had a couple of rock slides before her expert cave maintenance!!

We are going on an excursion to “Sculpture-by-the-Sea” on Tuesday 15th November 2011. All children need to be at school by 9.15am with a hat, their morning tea, lunch and drinks in labelled paper or plastic bags. We have enough parent volunteers now, thanks – please bring a hat, backpack and mobile phone if you are coming on the excursion. The cost for the excursion is $15.00 per child. We are travelling by hired bus to Bondi Beach (leaving 9.30am) and then we will be picked up at 1.00pm from Tamarama Beach.

We are having a pergola built on Tuesday. It will extend from the lunch veranda and will give us more dry space when it rains. We will also be able to add creative touches to make the area more shaded in Summer.

Thanks to Kris for fixing our tent! Thanks to everyone who washes and sweeps!

Love from

Sue, Chris and Michael.

The boxes have now arrived so you can start bringing in books from next Wednesday 9th November. I will put the boxes in the front foyer. The books need to be placed in separate categories and each box will contain only one category of books. I will put a list of the categories on the wall next to the boxes and label each box.

Thank you!

Sue

Hi everyone

  • Important discussion- Last Thursday I missed the newsletter cut off to tell you about the talk we had that day. We were dealing with some incidents of threats and violence between the kids and had a huge discussion around the ramifications of this. I talked about ‘Who You Are’ as being the result of a vast number of small choices in behaviour. We talked about who we want to be as adults, imagining the lives and relationships we would like to have. We talked about the fact that who we are as adults starts now. We also shared how we know that we are ‘going to lose it’ when we are angry with someone; this means the signs we need to notice to be able to head off a negative conflict. For some it was a clenching in the hands or a tight feeling in the chest, a hot feeling or the sensation that the room is too small. We talked about this moment being the opportunity we each have to know we are getting out of control and to stop the escalation, whether by stepping away, getting help, breathing deeply, giving a clear (and angry) message or other strategies. It may be worth discussing your own strategies with your kids as to how you manage this trigger point, as a way of following up our important talk.
  • Save the date: Friday 25 November (Week 7) is our Sleep Over. Please keep the date in mind; I would very much like all the kids to be there. Each family can decide if anyone else is staying as well, and we will be writing letters home after the concert so that each member of the class can clearly express their preferences around this.
  • Photos: Kath and Tracy: You are astonishingly talented and sensitive photographers who may have made this slightly-more-sensitive-than-usual teacher teary with the beauty and insightfulness of your photos. Thanks so much for having the energy to also provide such a gorgeous breakfast as a celebration of your work and our kids.
  • Maths: Fractions again, with more depth in equivalent fractions.
  • English: Play play play play play (alternatively- rehearse, leap, dive, learn, forget, yell, threaten, wrestle, learn, forget, rehearse, learn?). We have also been looking at easily confused words, when to use them and how to distinguish between them (such as where, we’re and were).
  • Currambena Concert and Social: Next Friday night the kids will perform their plays. Please remember that all families are responsible for the supervision of their own children at this event.

Have a good week
Cheers
Jo

Hi there,

IMPORTANT NEWS in regards to next year: With our beloved ladies, Olivia, going to Mexico and Jo, having a baby, a few parents have been asking, what’s happening next year? Well, the selection committee have culled the list of applicants and interviews will begin next week for 2 teaching positions that have been offered for the year 2012. What this means for the children is: one of the chosen teachers will work with Fran, team teaching the K/1 class. Sarah will continue teaching her current group next year, who will then be year 2. Jo will remain at the school for the first 6-8 weeks of Term 1, supporting the teacher taking years 3 & 4 (currently Olivia’s class). Also, there will most likely be a classroom move happening. If so, Wendy will be moving into Jo’s class space, for extra space, and Sarah’s class will move into what is now Wendy’s – all very exciting stuff!!

With the concert just one week away, (aaahhh!!!!) our morning practises have been getting more and more serious and showing great promise of what is going to be a very interesting, enlightening and fun evening.

Throughout this week in English the Rainbows have been spelling new words from their storywriting and in Maths have been learning about ordinal numbers.

Over the past 2 terms the Diamonds have been obsessed with a series of books called “Ivy and Bean”. If you haven’t already heard the stories, they follow the adventures (sometimes mischievous) of two young girls who develop a very close friendship. We are currently up to book 7 “what’s the big idea?” where the topic has turned to Global Warming! So, with the children’s curiosity bubbling and questions spilling out thick and fast we (including me) are discovering and learning more about this topic and, how we can help save our planet! On the wall in CASP is a collection of drawings displaying their interpretation of global warming – some are rather intense.

Thankyou, to the parents who came swimming with us on Tuesday. It was unfortunate that the weather was a little too chilly for the Baths and we were short on drivers, so if there are a couple of parents that could add their names to the list till the end of term that would be wonderful.

That’s all folks!

Sarah, Fran & Nicola.

We are delighted to welcome Mayla back to our group after her time away. She is settling right back in, needless to say, and so our group now has 23 students! Self-managed learning is proceeding apace… and so are play practices and text book pages and some fabulous stories at the moment. Focus on 2D shapes, writing and editing skills and maths problem solving. We have two CoFA students beginning with us next week so expect an outpouring of art as well! On Tuesday, it was Bubbles with Tristan, as we investigated bubble wands and how bubbles form.

Congratulations to everyone who helped with the breakfast yesterday. It was a wonderful success and the photos are just gorgeous. Tracey and Kath have done a superb job with them.

Please help your child with costume requirements for the play if they ask. Most are very straight forward. The Concert night is FRIDAY 11TH AND IT STARTS AT 6PM! our class is last but please be here on time as an attentive audience.

JERVIS BAY CAMP… I am collecting a list of names of parents who wish to come for our week of camping from 5th to 9th December. Please make sure your name is on this list if you are interested. I do need, if possible, a couple of trailers to take the gear down. We drive ourselves to Bristol Point via Nowra and  if anyone coming has a car with a tow bar and access to a trailer that would be fantastic. Please speak to me asap. I am also collecting names of those interested in coming down for the REUNION WEEKEND 10th and 11th which is open to all Currambena families, past and present. Please let me know if you are interested in this also.

I think that’s all for today.                   Love,  Wendy
