Hello Currambena,
CONGRATULATIONS….. to our Jo on the birth of her little daughter Maisie.
A very warm welcome from everyone at Currambena to you darling Maisie and your big journey into the world!
To Jo and Nick welcome to the wonderful realm of parenthood.
THANK-YOU to….
- Everyone who came to maintenance day and did a big clean-up before the term started.
- Eduardo for fixing the door handle on the upstairs toilet.
WHAT’S HAPPENING…..
B-Mac Construction has done a great job rebuilding the retaining wall and fence, and re-positioning our fallen water tanks along the back of Louise’s classroom. Rodney, Laylah-Mae’s dad, is busy today hammering on all the new palings for the fence.
Our next exciting build project is the replacing of the roof on the veranda running along in front of the staffroom down to the Preschool and up to the main building. Hallelujah! No more leaking down your neck!!! and all over school bags etc.
We will keep you posted as to when it will be starting; with all this wet weather the sooner the better as far as I am concerned.
REMINDERS……
Canteen – Calling all you lovely cooks if Friday canteen is to happen!! So please put your name down on the roster which is on the main notice board when you walk in the gate.
Next Council is our AGM Monday 28th May
Love Julianna

Hello Everyone!
We would like to welcome Belinda to Currambena. She is joining our class and Wendy’s class as a teaching assistant for this term. She has already done some reading, maths and English work with us this week.
This week seems to have flown by. We having been working hard on learning our times tables this week. We have practised a lot and shared advice as to how to work out ones we don’t know. We’ll be moving on to division next.
We wrote some terrific stories based on creepy, mysterious pictures that we looked at. The children shared lots of ideas before choosing which picture they took their inspiration from. Some of the language they used was really imaginative and interesting.
We have made it out of school twice this week. The library on Tuesday to pick up some books for our personal projects and also to The Secret Garden for P.E. If there are any sport enthusiasts in our community that would like to come in and do a sport lesson with us, that would be fabulous.
The Education Committee convened this week. As part of raising awareness of different languages and music in school, we hope that some parents may like to come in and teach us something. If your mother tongue is something other than English, we would love for you to come in and teach us a few words and share some of your culture with us. Also, if you play an instrument that you’d like to share with the children, please offer to come in.
Have a great weekend.
Louise
Dear Parents,
We are enjoying this wonderful weather, the classroom is often empty and everyone outside engrossed in an extraordinary range of activities.
The ABC’s are still enjoying the company of Paul (our student teacher ). He began our first topic this term about crystals with an experiment with salt and water. This triggered an amazing amount of enthusiasm so we have set up and experiment to grow stalactites and stalagmites. Nicola brought in some wonderful crystals and each child has investigated a crystal and we now have an experiment table and a crystal display table. This afternoon Robyn (Heidi’s mum) is going to come in and share her knowledge on crystals.
On a less interesting note: Nits are back. Please Check and exterminate!
The XYZ’s have been exploring percussion in music and counting money for maths. They are also creating power points inspired by a project completed by Matthew when he was away. The children are interesting in learning yoga for their PE this term. Is anyone keen to help?
The ABC’s are up to ‘O’ and everyone has logged on to the computer to experiment with reading books on line. If you are interested at doing this at home come and get their personal password and user name. I allocate a number of books on their level. When these are complete come to me and I can allocate some more.
On Monday I had three meetings: staff meeting, education committee meeting and council! (the joy of democracy.) The education meeting was very productive and we plan to have a forum on the 28th of May with the AGM. The aim is to share soup and bread and information, so that we can make an informed decision about more language and music in the school. It would be great if you could have a family discussion about these ideas so everyone can have input into the decision making process. Thank you to Alison who did a wonderful job and who put in so much time and energy to plan the meeting, get reps for each class, prepare the agenda and run the meeting.
Blake is planning to go bush walking on Fridays so please send shoes and hats on Fridays.
Take care
Fran, Blake and Nicola.
Hello Everyone
Our excursion to Lane Cove Plaza to buy pizza making ingredients yesterday went very well. Everyone seemed to enjoy walking up the street, drawing money to pay for the shopping, having a drink from the bubbler, going to the toilet, shopping and then walking back to school. We then prepared the ingredients and each child made their own individual pizza. It was a valuable activity for many reasons – physical activity, road safety and awareness, being in a group, deciding what to buy, paying for it, carrying it back to school and then all the skills and knowledge involved in cooking.
This week we have been talking about tents, playing in the tents outside and writing camping stories. Today we are making a big camp fire in the fire pit. We are going to toast the bread and marshmallows we bought yesterday. Today’s cooking will be very hands-on and will be a type of science experiment as well as making food to eat. We will also draw up fire making and safety agreements in Morning Meeting. We have been collecting wood for a week in preparation for making the fire.
In Craft today we will be doing marbling and jewellery making stemming from children’s interests this week.
Following the Education Meeting on Monday where we talked about language and music at Currambena, the children have come up with the idea of learning stories, songs and games in languages other than English. If anyone would like to come and teach the children a song or a game or read a book in another language we’d love that.
The library works on an honour system. You borrow the books and when you have finished with them please return the books to the library and put them in the box for reshelving. Please do not put them on the preschool bookshelf, thanks! There is also a Stanton Library book missing from the preschool book shelf. It is “I want a friend” by Tony Ross. Could everyone have a look for it at home? If you find it please return it to me or to any local library. The book is on my ticket and I do not want to have to pay to replace it. Thanks Everyone!
Thanks to everyone who is collecting 2l plastic milk bottles. The igloo we want to build takes about 428 bottles, so if everyone collects about 10 bottles we’ll have enough. Some people have about 7 bottles so we might have enough to begin building in about ywo weeks. Please wash the bottles and then put the lids back on. If you haven’t been saving the lids we have some in preschool. Thank you!
There are three maintenance jobs needing to be done-
Thanks to everyone for washing and to Amanda and Chris for revitalising our cushions.
New regulations state that if someone different to the parent or nominated carer is picking a child up from preschool this needs to be in writing so please send me an email in this instance as well as telling us. Also if your child will be away or arriving late please send me an email, not Julianna. My email address is sueg@currambena.nsw.edu.au
Love from
Sue. Chris and Michael.
This week we have been revising times tables, reading and commenting on book reviews, completing our “Being Me” posters, measuring length, calculating our heart rates before during and after exercise, reading, beginning to learn about crystals and how they form, beginning PIPs, producing samples of our best handwriting, visiting Lane Cove Library, completing text book pages, learning languages and getting into the swing of self-managed learning time again. As well, we had a researcher from Macquarie Uni on Tuesday, we have Belinda starting as a casual assistant and we had an extremely long Class meeting which resolved some important issues and discussed a range of topics, including Languages and Music at Currambena, as requested by Education Committee! No surprise if some of us are feeling a little tired!
The group would like to go on several PE excursions this term, including ice skating and rock climbing both of which are quite adult intensive in terms of driving there and back etc. COULD YOU BE AVAILABLE TO DRIVE ON A TUESDAY FOR US? Please let me know if anyone can help so I can plan the excursions.
We are planning a MINI FAIR for Thursday 17th May and a movie /dinner night for later in the term. More details later.
Next week I will be away for Thursday and Friday. A relief teacher who has worked for Currambena before, Ann-Marie, will be taking the group.
I hope you all have a good week.
Cheers, Wendy
Hello,
Apologies for not having displayed our Term’s timetable yet. So that you are aware, nothing has changed, except for PE choices which will still be on a Tuesday afternoon. However, there is the commencement of French with Britta (Elina’s mum) on a Wednesday, for the younger group, while the elders are doing Italian. Library visits will be every 3rd Monday and our turn is next Monday 7th.
The children have all made a start on their chosen topic for their personal projects this term. I am really excited at the diversity of their choices and the topics they wish to explore. We brainstormed some questions they wish to have answered and information they plan to discover, some children have also decided to partner up for this. As part of our Aboriginal studies this term I plan to incorporate the arrival and settlement of the British in Australia. With this in mind, I will be planning an excursion linked to this topic area, though am still researching possibilities and will keep you posted on that one. There are some really interesting places we could go and visit around Sydney.
Dance was our chosen PE choice for this week. The children were all engaged and appeared to have a lot of fun; learning some complicated “hip hop” moves, observing the New Zealand “Haka” and free dancing to some familiar songs. We also managed to squeeze in a few dance games towards the end. Next weeks PE choice is swimming! We will walk to Lane Cove pool for this, so Tuesday next week, please pack swim gear!!
Topic areas in Maths we will be focusing on this term will be: addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, patterns & algebra. In English, the children will be extending (always) on their story writing skills, learning more about procedural writing, retells and recounts. Spelling, grammar, reading and handwriting will continue to be covered weekly through their contract work.
Over the next couple of weeks I will have a student teacher working with me, her name is Skylen. So, if you see an unfamiliar face in the classroom, please introduce yourself. She will be taking some lessons with the children over the coming weeks.
I will be away this Friday, 4th attending a workshop and Karen (thankyou, thankyou) will be taking my class.
Reminder: Any absences or late arrivals, please email me at……….. sarahm@currambena.nsw.edu.au. Any holiday or sick leave that extends beyond 3 days needs to be explained and for you to fill out an extended leave form, available from Julianna or submit a doctor’s certificate to me. This is a legal requirement.
Take care, Sarah.
PS. Almost forgot, thank-you’s to Robyn and Deborah, who will be doing reading with the children on a Friday. And, to Carolyn for your devoted fish care and to Lisa who fed the fish during the holidays. Hope that’s it? Forgive me if I missed anyone.
