Hello everyone,

Another action-packed week in preschool!

Halloween, Diwali and the end of year school concert rehearsals are but a few of the events everyone has participated in this week!

We yet again didn’t make it to Kimberley Playground as the children voted to stay at preschool. In hindsight it was a good thing as we didn’t want to miss canteen are that was being run by Benji’s Mum, Isabelle, and Yukt’s Dad Yogesh. We also took part in another fabulous drama class with Bec, children were able to create their own imaginary potion and turn a peer into whatever they chose! It was so lovely to see everyone so engaged in the class.

Tuesday saw preschool take part in another successful whole school lockdown drill in St Elmo’s as well as Buddies. On Wednesday Vision Screening came to preschool to conduct eye tests on all children whose parents had given permission to do so.

We made Diyas in craft as part of our Diwali celebrations on Thursday as well as taking part in a Halloween costume parade around the school.

As the end of year concert quickly approaches, we’ve also spent lots of time finalising our performances pieces for the night and rehearsing. We’ve just finalised our finale performance, and with only 2 weeks until the big night plan on doing lots of rehearsing over the next two weeks.

That’s it for this week!

Love

Hi all,

The concert date is fast approaching and our rehearsals are coming along.

The group has been really involved in the collaborative story/script writing process and have created a unique performance piece that is constantly evolving.

We spent this week looking at patterns and more whole number work.

We also learned about Opals and their different types. We researched where they come from and about a place called Cooper Pedy where many people live underground. We used this information to write our persuasive sentences.

The children were keen to do more ‘booklet’ work and I have spent some time making little activity books for the class. These are for children to practise some of the skills learnt over the term and are optional. If they come home unfinished, do not feel like it has to be completed.

A popular game this last week has been Dodgeball. The children have been borrowing the dodgeball from Wendy’s class and playing on the handball court.

Dear parents
What a week it’s been. So many Celebrations- Diwali, Dia de los Muertos, Halloween and even a pinch and a punch o finish it off.
It was a delight to see the children having so much fun and wonderful to have many cultural practices shared in the classroom.

Our play is getting some traction but there’s a lot to do in only two weeks!

We finished up our unit of work in brilliant bodies with a very fun rich task on Thursday where the children had to ‘show what they know’ by filling a in blank body outline. Amelia and I were so proud of the details that were remembered and added by the children. We hope to hang these for a few days next week when we find some space.

Happy weekend
Jess

Hi everyone,

Happy week 3! This term is already flying by and it’s a little bit scary with how quickly the school concert date is approaching…

Our rehearsals have been well underway this week, and most of the children have memorised their lines beautifully. We have just about finished blocking each scene and are working hard on organising our transitions which are proving to be challenging with so many of them on stage at once.

We also finished up our brilliant bodies unit of work by returning to the task we originally set the children at the beginning of term 3, where they had to label a human body with as much information, description or features as they could. This time, the children completed the same task except with a focus on the internal features of the body that we have learnt over the course of the term, and worked on large life-size (Amelia-sized) outlines of a body in groups. It is always important to see the progression of learning from the children and for them to reflect on their own development and understanding.

Just a reminder that next week it is our turn to go to the Lane Cove Library on Monday afternoon, so please make sure you pack any books that need to be returned.

Hellloooooooooo!!

Halloweeeeeeenn was the hottest topic in town this week with a massive focus on the children being ‘grateful’ for this celebration and parade. I think the number of children dressed up on Thursday has been the largest contingent I have seen in all the years they have been doing it. Ghosts, ghouls, murderers, witches, killer clowns, zombies and devils paraded around the school and then at 3:00 pm set off down streets, trick or treating.

Other things happening this week included some serious writing, story writing and handwriting. We looked at different times in both analog and digital and we did some reading and we visited Lane Cove library. The children have taken off into the pool like a duck to water showcasing their abililty to swim several laps and perform dives. I have been impressed with their stamina and swimming technique. Bec came in for drama, and Nate came and did another session in Hip Hop. We did lots more play practice and costume making and a few props were made.

I ended up showing the children where they would be sleeping in the lodge at camp and we wrote a couple of sentences on what we are excited and nervous about. As you can imagine there is a range of excitement and nerves. Some children are not nervous about anything and others are apprehensive about getting to sleep (on their own) and being away from home. All completely normal feelings. But its good to voice this, so all the children know to be sensitive to each other and how they are feeling.

I think that’s it!

Love, Sarah

Hi everyone.

Huge thanks to Meg, Lily and Jessica for holding the fort last week while I was staying with my daughter, Anna, and her new baby son, Arthur. Photo attached! He is gorgeous, of course, and they are doing well. He’s even sleeping for four hours in a row already! Thanks to everyone for their kind wishes and congratulations.

This week has been busy and fun as usual. In English, we’ve revised parts of speech and learned about prepositions and their uses. We’ve also, of course, been finalising the script for our play! Very exciting. The kids have done an amazing job writing it and rehearsals will start in earnest next week once we get Halloween out of our systems!

In Maths, we’ve revised times tables as usual and also worked on 3D shapes and volume. There is some brilliant 3D sketching happening.

In HSIE, Lily and Jessica have presented lessons on Aboriginal culture and perspectives, relating this to Booderee National Park and the Aboriginal community in Jervis Bay. We watched and listened to Bernie McLeod, an Aboriginal elder whom we met last year during our camp week.

Costumes and props are being made in craft and we had a terrific swimming session on Tuesday, using the 50 m pool and practising treading water and floating on backs. Everyone attempted to swim two laps, using any stroke, stopping only briefly after one lap. This is my way of checking that they are water safe and can play in the deep water where they are out of their depth. Of course, water safety and swimming stamina are important for camp in Week 9, too.

Thursday’s Halloween costumes were amazing! Thank you to Lily and Jessica for decorating our room and also thank you to Lilith and Judy for the incredible Halloween cupcakes! Enjoy the photos of the parade!

I hope you are enjoying the Year 6 My time at Currambena pieces and the photos of our leavers. We have eight wonderful people leaving for high school this year, going in different directions and all well very ready and well-equipped for this new step. We are very proud of them all.

Monday night at 6pm is our postponed Camp Meeting. As I said in my email, the induction is essential for anyone hoping to stay overnight with us at camp. I will talk about the camp program and about some of the extraordinary growth opportunities a camp like this provides for the children. Hope to see you there.

Have a wonderful week!

Love,
Wendy

My Time at Currambena by Ariel
Hello hello.
I moved to Currambena when I was in year 3 in 2021 after being at Lane Cove Public. I’ve had a lot of good memories here (some bad ones too) and I’m really glad I came here.

My trial day was in Sarah’s class, but I moved up to Leesa’s class because I mostly got to know people who were moving up the next year so I started there with them. The class was quite small and there were only four other girls apart from me (Amy, Skye, Zariah, Ruth) and I quickly made friends with them. Leesa was really really nice and she made me feel really welcome and probably one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. I spent most of the time that year playing with plasticine with Amy, Skye, Ruth and Za and it was a lot of fun. That year was the second year of COVID so the whole of term 3 and a bit of term 4 was in lockdown and I practically lost my mind. Ruth and Zariah also moved away at the end of that year, which was really sad.

The next year I stayed in Leesa’s class, while Amy and Skye (being in the year above me) moved up to Wendy’s. That year was pretty difficult, because, since Amy, Skye and I were in different classes, we didn’t see each other as much and we had a lot of communication issues. I did make a lot of good friends that year in my class though, like Evie, Phoebe, Zali and especially Emme, who I was really close with. I also went on my first camp that year, since the year before we couldn’t go due to COVID. Leesa moved away that year at the end of term 3, which was really sad. Vinnie took over for the last term and we made a weird play that I cringe at just thinking about. Because I was really sad about Leesa leaving, I wasn’t that nice to Vinnie in term 4. (Sorry, Vinnie.)

The next year I moved up to Wendy’s class and I was in a class with Amy and Skye again. I honestly don’t really remember what I did last year, I think I just sat at my desk talking to Amy or Skye most of the time. Wendy is great and very nice. That year we went to Castle Mountain and Jervis Bay. Jervis Bay was really fun, and I remember crying a lot at the year six ceremony because Amy and Skye were leaving. I also procrastinated most of my work last year until Friday.

This year has been good. I’ve been in Wendy’s class again and I’ve had many friends this year like Emme, Zali, Evie, Phoebe, Scarlett, Harriet, and Kitty. It’s been a bit sad without Amy and Skye, but I still see them often, so that’s good. For camp, we went to Castle Mountain (which sorry Wendy, I hated) and Canberra (which was good). Soon we’ll go to Jervis Bay. We’re also currently writing our play.

Overall, I’ve had a really good time at Currambena. I’ve met some amazing people and made some amazing memories that I’ll never forget. I do think I’m ready for high school, but I will miss Currambena a lot and it has a very special place in my heart.
Thank you to all my teachers and friends along the way!

Listen closely, listen well,
To the story I’m about to tell.
This story is about this night
And if you don’t listen, you might die.
I am part of something out of school,
We like to call the Banana Crew.
Most of the time we are nothing to fear,
All except for ONE DAY OF THE YEAR…
The one day of the year happens to be today,
When all bananas come out to prey,
Prey on unsuspecting children like you,
And if you cross paths with them, who knows what they’ll do…
I know they might look like good fun,
But if you see one, TURN AROUND AND RUN.
So this is a warning, girls and boys,
A banana attack will deploy.
I know this sounds absurd, the weirdest poem you’ve ever seen,
But anything can happen on HALLOWEEN…
- The Coolest Banana Ever

Chaired by Raffy and Luca (Amelia’s Class)

  • Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to Acknowledge the Cammeraygal and Wallumettegal people of the Eora Nation. Thank you for sharing the land on which we meet today.

  • iPad charging by Archana

Just a reminder to please put iPads back on charge after using them. They have been found unplugged for a number of days recently.

  • Costume making in small groups by Crafty

Crafty will be inviting people to work on their costumes in small groups throughout the day today. It is just a reminder.

  • Using chairs to reach the monkey bars by Wendy

Wendy has noticed people recently using chairs to help them reach the monkey bars or to climb back down. She wanted to clarify if there was an agreement that we can use the chairs. A discussion followed that we should not be climbing up things if we cannot climb back down independently, and that having the chairs underneath the monkey bars poses a safety risk if someone were to fall. Wendy asked for a vote if the chairs can be near the monkey bars or not. The majority voted no, they cannot.

  • Compost bins by Vinnie and Jamie

Vinnie explained that we have been having some issues with wildlife eating food from our compost bins and he would like a discussion for some ideas on how to improve this issue. Jamie added that it can be dangerous for wildlife as the food could be unsafe for them to eat. She also suggested that we could get bins with lids that are emptied at the end of the day. The discussion following suggested to bring the bins inside the classroom during the day, to empty the bins into the compost drums in the top playground each afternoon as a pack-away job, or to get lidded-bins. Vinnie said thank you, and he will take these ideas back to his class and other classes can organise their own systems.

  • Not letting people watch beyblades by Aidan

Aidan said he no longer needed this topic.

  • Scooters by Rome and Sienna

Rome said that she has seen scooters and bikes left out of the designated rack everyday and she often trips on them or they get in her way. Can people please put them away after using. Sienna added that she has seen helmets also left out, and a number have already gotten lost. People also use other people’s scooters and helmets without asking. A discussion followed clarifying that the agreement is for all scooters, bikes, and helmets to be packed away after you use them, that you should not use someone else’s property without asking, and Mabel offered to organised the wheels rack during sustaining and possibly add stickers to distinguish the school vehicles from personal ones.

End of school meeting!
