There’s been a hum of excitement in preschool this week as we continue exploring our wider community through art, conversation, and shared experiences. With Art Week in full swing, the children have had the opportunity to take part in crafting beautiful paper lanterns for the upcoming Lantern Social at Tambourine Bay on Tuesday, 24 June. As the pieces come together, so does the anticipation—we can’t wait to see our creations glowing alongside those from the wider Currambena community in a joyful celebration of light, creativity, and connection.

During group times, our conversations have turned to the importance of inclusive play and celebrating gender diversity. We’ve been listening to each other’s ideas, reflecting on what it means to be kind and welcoming in our play, and learning how our words and choices can create spaces where everyone feels seen and respected. These discussions are shaping not just our play, but our shared understanding of community and identity.

A growing interest in fire has taken hold in our outdoor play, sparking thoughtful questions and imaginative scenarios. We’ve reached out to Lane Cove Fire & Rescue to invite a visit from the fire truck, fingers crossed we’ll hear back soon! Meanwhile, we’re also planning a special firepit experience at preschool, where children can safely gather to roast marshmallows and learn about fire safety, cooking, and working together. We hope to take our proposal to the school meeting next week for approval, democratic learning in action.

Looking ahead, there will be a small staffing change as Lisa prepares to take some well-deserved leave from Friday of Week 10 (4 July 2025), returning in Week 2 of Term 3. During this time, Abby and Michael will support the program alongside me, and we’ll also be joined by May, a trusted casual educator, who the children already know.

We look forward to sharing stories and photos from the Lantern Social, our communal fire, and more next week. As always, thank you for your ongoing support and the warmth you bring to our preschool community.

Love

Katrina, Lisa, Abi and Michael

Hello Everyone,

What a busy and exciting week it’s been with Art Week in full swing!

With last week being a short one, we used some time to wrap up lessons from then. In Maths, we completed our unit on measurement, with a special focus on length. The students enjoyed a variety of hands-on investigations around the school, comparing sizes and applying their learning in real-world contexts.
In English, we explored the difference between the letters ‘d’ and ‘b’, a tricky pair for many early writers! The children created helpful posters to remind themselves how to recognise and form each letter correctly.

A special highlight of the week was a visit from Oli’s pet turtle, Gobble, on Wednesday morning. The class had a wonderful time asking questions and getting the chance to gently pat Gobble, it was such a memorable experience!

Art Week was a huge success! Over three days, students worked in mixed-age groups across all classes to create and restore beautiful art projects in preparation for The Social this coming Tuesday.

A reminder: The Social begins at 5:00 PM at Tambourine Bay. Please remember to bring along your child’s lantern, which was sent home with them on Friday.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there and to another fantastic week ahead with the Ladybirds!

With love,
Meg (and Sarah D)

Hi everyone,

What a fantastic week we have had! Our Art Week has been an absolute success thanks to the tireless efforts of Crafty Chris. From Wednesday to Friday the entire primary school engaged in activities creating lantern sculptures to showcase at our school social Tuesday the 24th. It was a fantastic week for the children to work in mixed age groups from Meg’s all the way through to Wendy’s. We also had 5 talented artists supporting the groups to put to life their creative ideas.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at the social on Tuesday!

Next week, our elders will be finishing off their first PIPs using Google Slides on the school laptops. They will be presenting them on Tuesday in week 10. I will send out an email soon with more details.

What an amazing experience the children have had this week making lanterns. It always astounds me how the vision comes together. Working alongside Crafty’s highly skilled artists, apprentices and friends the children created a Loch Ness Monster, reinvigorated the dragon from a few years ago and made their own lantern, as a part of our “Art week”. In cross age/stage groups we all worked and collaborated together, cutting, weaving & taping bamboo to make the frames then carefully glued the paper over the bamboo to create the sculpture. The children were in awe and full of excitement as the monster made it out from the classroom space to the deck to take on ‘Life’. On Friday, we all took to paint the lanterns and creatures to finish off – in preparation of our Tuesday night social down at Tambourine Bay.

So not much else transpired this week. We had music with Gemma on Monday and began another Soundwaves unit focusing on the sound ‘igh’, i_e, ie. The children did some story writing and we listened to an episode of “Grow Your Mind” which talked about FRIENDSHIPS and how sometimes they can be tricky to navigate. All Pip’s were completed on Friday too and will be presented next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings starting from 9:30 am. You are welcome to come so check with your child which day they are timetabled or send me a message and I can let you know.  We continue to read our book “Wylah – the Koori Warrior” each afternoon which the group are really engaged in listening to.

Hopefully, I will see you all at the social on Tuesday night to revel in the lighting of the lanterns.

Love, Sarah

Dear Parents,

Art Week has once again been a truly inspiring experience. The children had the opportunity to collaborate with professional artists to create large-scale group lanterns resembling a Loch Ness monster, and a dragon. They also worked to build and decorate their own individual lantern, ready for next Tuesday evening’s social event. Some of the new skills they had to learn were quite challenging, but it was heartening to see children of different ages supporting one another. These multi-age, school-wide activities play an important role in strengthening our community by fostering relationships across classes.

In other news, we managed to squeeze in some mathematical revision using the split strategy for the mental addition of larger numbers. We also completed our Soundwaves textbooks and have read quite a number of chapters from our class novel “Leo and Ralph”

I hope you’ve all had a beautiful weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday night down at Tambourine Bay.

Warm regards,

Jess and Susan

The lantern making this week has been a gorgeous celebration, with so many talented artists working with us and amazing creations coming into being in an extraordinarily short time. Thank you so much to Crafty Chris for organising it all. It has been a delight to work with my group of children each day, cycling through the different activities. Now we are looking forward to the launching next Tuesday night!

Before Art Week officially began on Wednesday, we managed to fit in some maths, practising times tables and creating fractions posters to demonstrate learning about the meanings of a range of fraction notation and terminology. Completed posters will be up on our walls very soon.

In English, we revisited types of nouns, pronouns and types of sentences… and we also wrote a group email to Kateryna, the teacher in Ukraine whose work we support with some of our fundraising money, to thank her for the certificate of appreciation that she designed for us. All the children in our group have helped with fundraising so everyone has a copy of this certificate for their portfolio now.

We are having a wonderfully musical time on our room at the moment, with piano and guitars often to be heard. It’s so lovely that the children have access to these instruments and space in which to play during the school day… and also lovely for others to listen! Of course, one of the rules for playing is that it has to sound beautiful!

Next week is incredibly busy with the social on Tuesday, cyber-safety parent evening on Wednesday and then Council governance training on Thursday. Hope to see many of you at some of those events! The Cyber Safety evening will be especially valuable for parents of our group with phones and gaming such important aspects of the children’s lives. See the calendar for details.

Keep warm and well!

Love,
Wendy

Chris and I thoroughly enjoyed working with our group of 20 parents and teachers last Saturday for the conflict resolution course. It was a thoughtful and engaged group who worked with us through the twelve skills, listening, discussing concepts and participating in role plays during the course of the day.

Thank you to all participants and thank you also to Currambena Council for funding this personal and professional development opportunity for members of our school community.

Our hardworking sustaining group is making progress in the library on Fridays and it would be great if there were any parents able to help out with a few hours of work as well. Please email me or just pop in and I can show you what needs to be done.
Thanks again to those who have already contributed hours of help!

Cheers, Wendy

Hello Everyone,

This week in preschool has been full of dramatic play, conversations, and confident performances as the children continued to explore self-expression, voice, and identity across a range of experiences.

A strong focus throughout the week has been our ongoing work around body autonomy and protective behaviours. During group times, we revisited important stories from the Office of the Children’s Guardian, including Andy Learns the Undies Rule and Fiona Finds Five Heroes. These stories prompted meaningful discussion among us around private body parts, personal boundaries, and the importance of speaking up. We also introduced the idea of each child identifying their own five trusted adults, people they can go to if something ever feels unsafe or uncomfortable. The children took this seriously, thoughtfully tracing their hands or drawing and naming people who make them feel safe and supported. These sessions are part of our ongoing commitment to helping children understand that they are the boss of their own bodies.

Another highlight this week has been puppetry with Abi, who has been working closely with small groups of children to develop some amazingly creative puppets. These sessions have been creative, and often very funny. Puppet play provides children with a safe and expressive avenue to explore social interaction, humour, and voice.

On Wednesday, we had our final session with Mayuko from Cool Planet, where we began exploring the concept of the circular economy. The children were introduced to the idea that instead of following a traditional “take, make, dispose” model, we can find ways to reuse, repair, and recycle materials to reduce waste and protect the environment. Through discussion and hands on activities, we started to unpack what this means in everyday life and how small actions, like composting food scraps or reusing materials, can contribute to a more sustainable future.

In the afternoons, we’ve continued inviting children to take centre stage if they wish, as part of our calm end-of-day routine. Many children have taken up this invitation to sing or perform for the group, with a growing sense of confidence and pride. These moments have been a great way for children to support one another with quiet attention and applause.

On reflection it’s been a week of children claiming space, expressing themselves, and building a stronger understanding of themselves and others, through both playful exploration and important conversations.

Warmly,

Katrina, Lisa, Abi and Michael
